‘My challenge in my 30s is to ask more questions and not be so ignorant’

Visits home to Germany are rare (she and Josh recently returned there to celebrate her mother’s 60th birthday, but more often her family visit her in Paris) and mention of her father is the only thing, during our interview, that makes her uncomfortable (they are estranged and she refuses to discuss him). Her success in Paris, as both a model and an actress, seems to have given her a greater affinity with France than Germany. Although she expresses great admiration and love for her mother, she has few fond memories of her childhood and hated her Catholic education. ‘I was so suppressed, and I have been left with this problem with authority – I hate bureaucracy. Leaving school at 15 and going to Paris was the greatest liberation.’
When I mention how articulate she is (in three languages) and comment on her intelligence (she is quick and clearly clever) she shakes her head in disbelief. ‘One of the biggest lessons I have learnt is to acknowledge how ignorant I really am. Realising that – only a couple of years ago – was a real awakening for me and that’s when I became an adult. My challenge in my 30s is to ask more questions and not be so ignorant. I want to know about everything – politics, different cultures, different religions, the people you meet on the street,’ she says with a charming, self-deprecating little smile.
There will, of course, be other challenges – she would like to develop scripts, and produce as well as act, and she would love the chance to work with Josh (she had a cameo role in an episode of Fringe). But right now – as our interview comes to an end – she has just two things on her mind: ‘Kicking off these shoes and beginning my vacation with Josh.’
