A serviceman in 2 Rifles ordered the basic issue "non urgent" Lowa footwear - worth £45 - last month.

Instead of being sent with other military kit or posted, penpushers at the defence logistics centre in Bicester, Oxon, used a private courier.

The decision, costing £714.18, was uncovered by Plaid Cymru MP Elfyn Llwyd.

He said the fiasco was the "tip of the iceberg" and claimed he had invoices showing "hundreds of thousands" paid to couriers.

Mr Llwyd claimed that someone may be being "induced" to award them jobs.

He added: "My concern is for servicemen and women who have had to make do while this kind of expenditure is going on."

An MoD spokesman said: "Our priority is to ensure that our Armed Forces receive the kit that they require, when they need it.

"If a unit needs an item urgently then we make use of couriers.

"We are committed to making the department more efficient."
